Crucial Information for Women in Wake of Alabama’s Court Decision by Julie K. Federico

I have been wanting to write this for several weeks but have not had the quiet space to organize my thoughts and write something semi-articulate. I have the time now for which I am grateful. I do feel a certain amount of pressure to clearly state my objective and further thoughts. I believe the objective to be straightforward. I want to speak to the young women of Alabama with all of the tenderness possible via text rather than a face to face interaction. I was leveled by the decision by your state to ban abortions. I will never understand the reasons behind this. Rather than spend time cleaning up spilled milk I want to problem solve with you all. Financially secure women of Alabama will seek health care elsewhere if needed. It is those without financial resources that I am speaking to. If one does not have car or bus fare getting to Mississippi or another boarding state can prove out of ones’ reach. I believe Alabama’s ban on abortion is yet another burden that the poor will face that the rich will not encounter. This to me is almost more unfair than the original law. Almost. No one signs up to be poor yet many people are sometimes through no fault of their own. Coupled with this Alabama women needing an abortion are no longer offered these services. I can not get my head around this. I know what happens to unwanted, uncared for children. I have worked as a middle school counselor for almost 2 decades. I see the neglect, the disrespect, the unloveable. I see them turn to crime. In 18 years Alabama will have the worst crime problems they have ever seen and no one will have answers. Should we close the borders? Are we not tough enough on crime? No. You should allow women who do not want to have children the option of terminating the pregnancy. This is the higher ground to a lifetime of being neglected, unloved and unwanted. A fetus does not feel. A 13 years old going home every night to a house with no heat, water, or food feels this deeply on so many, many levels. The option of terminating a pregnancy is no longer an option in Alabama. This makes me so sad. Children need to be raised with love and compassion. They deserve this they need this. My church in Denver has started Project 1.27. It is an adoption agency for families wanting to help children who need a home. The women of Alabama can access this service as far as I know unless the state has also made some law around these services. This is a wonderful loving agency and has helped many, many children. But I know some people do not want to be pregnant and do not want to give birth. I think this is ok. Being a parent is a job for 2 or 3 people. Raising children alone if very challenging and not everyone’s desire. I recommend all of the childbearing age women of Alabama go get two forms of birth control. At times birth control fails. It is better to be safe than sorry unless you have the Uber fare to and from Georgia. At times men will pour on the love. Love, love love. If there is real trouble some men vanish. Please know this to be true. I am not judging I am trying to give factual information. Three months later they are not returning your texts and phone calls, you are pregnant, you can not get an abortion in your state and you are beyond desperate. You can call Project 1.27, have the baby and give it to the agency they will find a wonderful home for the infant. I believe this is potentially traumatic to do alone. It is so much easier to stop that one sperm than to orchestrate an adoption/abortion on your own. Please go get some legitimate birth control today. When the state of Alabama made this ruling they should have tripled the funding for birth control agencies. My hunch is that they did not do this. However, to be safe you have to please find some birth control, two types. The single motherhood road is extremely lonely, expensive, and isolating. Don’t sign up for it.

I am sorry that you have to go through this while the rest of the country, for now, is honoring Roe vs. Wade. Just be aware, alert, and educated to your future, if you should have an unwanted pregnancy. No one screams, “Yes, I want an unwanted pregnancy!” But they arrive as unwanted and unplanned as they are. Sex is part of life. With this information arm yourself and tell your friends to do the same. You will have many, many years for a family when you have the desire and finances. Do not back yourself into an Alabama we do not honor abortions here corner. This will do no one and mostly yourself no good. Watch your back, get birth control, and live happily ever after.
